Totally Sucks - outdated, April 1, 2006

I just graduated with a major in PR. This books lists 88 jobs in advertsing and PR. However, it is out of date. In the PR industry there are: bloggers, web site developers and other internet position. This books lists NONE of them. In advertising, some positions (like print traffic manager) are almost non-existant. This book needs to REMOVE old 1990's job titles and ADD the jobs that firms are hiring for in the 2000's. This review is for the 2006 version of the book (4th ed). I think the author has gotten lazy and needs to do a complete overhall. This book may be of use if you are looking for a job in PRINT advertising, but most advertising agencies seem to want a person with good design skills and not just newspaper print. This book NEVER lists web skills or HTML that many employers seek today. Sad.

Excellent overview of what makes advertising work, July 8, 2005

I am an accountant by trade who has recently taken on a volunteer advertising position. I found the book very informative in that it offered good common sensne to advertising. The conclusions were supported by research from all over the world. I will be reading it again.

This treatise is designed for patient, methodical readers with a quest for insight. Erik Du Plessis is committed to explaining how advertisements work on consumers' consciousness, so he reviews existing research on advertising, and includes cognitive science's understanding of how the brain works on a chemical and cellular level. His research is accessible, since he often recaps and provides analogies that bring it to life, but some of the material remains dense and even obfuscates key points. Du Plessis' results are accurate but may seem self-defining such as the idea that ads you like are ads you remember and they can be difficult to apply. This is an impressive attempt to bring social science and neurological theory to bear on advertising. Given the intangible nature of creativity, a strong intuitive understanding of what makes advertisements likeable might help ad designers get more from this dissection. Of course, the industry also wants to know how it can reach a tech-oriented audience that records its favorite programs on TIVO and fast-forwards through the ads anyway. We find that this innovative book may be most useful for professionals in areas that involve a quantifiable, systematic approach, such as methods for determining how many ads to buy and how to allocate them across television outlets and other media.

The authors are obviously battle-scarred veterans of the big agency ad wars. Every sentence of this how-to guide oozes with common sense and experience. Their tips range from the prosaic to the provocative: for example, they suggest Underpromise and Overdeliver (duh!); and at the other extreme, Quality Is the Absence of Non-Quality Signals (huh?).

Still, I can't fault the authors for stating the obvious, because in the real world, the obvious is what companies neglect to do, over and over and over. In fact, the obvious, paying attention to tried-and-true methods, thinking inside the box, is one of their major themes. Some others:

1. Your brand is BY FAR your most valuable asset.
2. You can't manage what you can't measure.
3. Marketing, creative, and research must work together to create great advertising.
4. Stress benefits (sounds easy, but rarely done).

Beyond its value as a guide for advertisers, the book will help any executive in any department who wants to improve his management skills. The authors focus on leading and building teams, handling personalities, navigating corporate politics, and executing projects. Nice job!

This book is divided into 52 ideas that supposedly can make a difference in the advertising that you execute for your product or service. Here is the problem with books that try and create a list, and the list has to contain a certain number of ideas (52, 365, top 12 monthly ideas, etc.) When you start to run out of ideas, but you still have numbers on the list that you must fill, you start to make stuff up that is simplistic or meaningless.

That is what I think happened with the authors of this book. Some of what they offer is worth rewarding, and will be helpful to companies who are looking to understand advertising just a bit better. But don't look for any real deep thinking here. Here are some of the 52 ideas:

o Don't Hide Your Brand Name
o Learn New Tricks
o Share Information

I'm not sure I need to spend $20.00 for this great advice. Here is my advice for free...pass on this book. There is not a lot of new information in this one.

When I discovered this work in the bookstore, I immediately purchased it. I had been using Kilbourne's video "Still Killing Us Softly," in my 11th grade classroom for a few years now. I and my students found her analysis and examples to be eye opening and honest. What her new book does is update her analysis of how women are objectified in advertising. Perhaps if you thought advertising has changed in it representations of women, Kilbourne clearly shows you it hasn't. She provides a plethora of contemporary examples that expose well a culture that puts a lot of its demands on women to look sexually beautiful. I use her work, and now her new video Still Killing Us Softly III, in my classroom because it's very much needed to help my students understand ways that the media and advertising help to maintain, shape, and reshape gender stereotypes. Her analysis helps to show how this culture of "beauty" can often lead to discrimination and the marginalization of women (and men) who don't fit the media constructions of beauty. I recommend this book for any teacher doing media literacy in the classroom. It's well written, well researched, and the last chapter brings forth the type of political analysis missing in much of media education.

Deadly Persuasion is one powerful book, and I certainly will never look at advertisements the same way again. This is a very well-thought out, well-supported account of how advertisers sell products by appealing to the socially-consctructed insecurities of girls and women, as well as the habits and patterns of addicts. She also clearly expresses her hypothesis that while she doesn't think that ads turn people into addicts or completely shape society, they do have an effect on how we see the world and on how addicts can maintain a state of denial.

One of the best aspects of the book is her use of real ads that illustrate without question the points that she makes. And looking at many of those that I've seen hundreds of times, I felt quite dumb for not really picking up the subtext or looking critically enough at them. The blatant manipulation in many of them is enough to turn me off any number of products for life.

Although I unhesitatingly give this book the highest rating, I must admit that in her conviction Kilbourne is sometimes repetitive, sometimes taking a point ever so slightly too far. But all in all, I find it a quite fair indictment of the advertising industry and its influence on consumers. As a former addict herself, Kilbourne is qualified to judge some aspects of advertising in a unique way, and her most frightening insight is that alcohol and tobacco advertisers understand addiction too, and use this knowledge to create and keep consumers from a very young age (their consumers have a nasty habit of dying off and they need to continuously create new buyers - internal communications from tobacco companies shows this to be a conscious act).

For anyone interested in a look into our current social climate, and the ways in which our thought processes and even beliefs can be influenced by external forces, this is a fascinating read. My eyes were opened in unexpected ways, and I learned a great deal from the book. I have a fantasy - perhaps a result of advertisements I've seen - that everyone will read it and start battling the messages we're sent... but that's just a dream.

When I read the book I found that it makes you learn about business in a way that was meeting you at your level.

It showed simple ideas and moved you from the basics to higher levels of marheting. It was easy to see exactly what I never knew and others things that I forgot.

Living in England it showed me just how simple this book transends across all continents and makes a dream a reality. I just want the book back, it seems everyone want to review it and then rush out and buy a copy!
